Mum Went Out and Never Came Back: The Child Waited for Her Until Dawn

Ive only known my mum for as long as I can remember, since I was a baby. Shes always been there for me Ive never had anyone else. Dad left before I was even born, so its just been the two of us. It was evening, and I promised myself Id be brave and wait for Mum to come back.

I kept repeating that promise to myself Id be brave and wait for her.

An hour passed, then another. Still no sign of Mum. I was only five at the time. I cried a little and checked her bedroom, just in case shed come back without me noticing. But the room was empty, and her shoes the ones she left in were gone.

Thats when the fear started to creep in. I ended up crying myself to sleep.

The next morning, sunlight crept through my bedroom curtains and woke me up. I got up and went to look for Mum again. I didnt go to the neighbours house Mum had always told me to steer clear of old Mr. Beckett next door. She said he was a rude, drunken man who liked to pick fights. I was rather scared of him.

Instead, I wandered outside, hoping Id spot Mum. People passed me by, not paying much attention to a little boy wandering on his own. I grew tired and sat on a park bench. An elderly lady sat there too. I sat down, and tears just started rolling down my cheeks again. The lady looked at me and asked what was wrong.

She told me to go home, thinking I was just being naughty, and gave me an apple. Still, I couldnt stop searching for Mum. The grownups around me seemed far too busy with their own lives to notice me.

Eventually, I was so worn out that I fell asleep in the park. Evening rolled round again. I felt cold and hungry. Someone must have called the police, because the next thing I knew, I was at the police station. After that, I was taken somewhere else put in the care of a lady who must have been from social services.

I want my mum! I cried again, hoping shed appear. But there was no mother in the room they took me to.

Later, another carer came and brought me some clothes, helped me change, and took me to a new place. Suddenly, I found myself in a house full of other children like me. I leaned against the wall and stood like that for ages, my head spinning. Deep down, I realised my mum was somewhere very far away, and she probably wasnt ever coming back.

P.S. Mum was hit by a car and died that evening after leaving the house.
