A stern husband kept his family tightly under his thumb, but it was his wife who bore the brunt of it. When someone is under constant pressure from a loved one, its easy to forget what normal really means. But everything changes the moment she realises her husband isnt as righteous as he claims to be.
Our protagonist has endured much in her challenging family life. Despite everything, she will come through. Your words and encouragement might help her navigate the storm shes facing.
A demanding and controlling partner.
My husband, Andrew, is an unyielding and demanding person. As the self-appointed head of the family, he decides everything, never budging or compromising. Everything must revolve around his wishes. I was aware of his personality before we married, but our parents arranged the match. Thats how it was done.
I am a trusting, open-hearted kind of person, so I put my faith in Andrew from the start. But over time, he began acting more like a master than a husband. He provides for us financially and insists I stay at home rather than work. At the same time, he expects the house to remain spotless, meals home-cooked and beautifully presented.
To prove my love, I had to bear him a son. Despite repeated attempts, I never fell pregnant. There were no health concerns. We saw plenty of doctors, but no one could find a reason.
Id all but lost hope. One morning, feeling rather unwell, I started my usual routine. Andrew had left for work early, grumpy as ever. I cleaned the house as usual.
Almost involuntarily, I took a pregnancy test, even though I expected nothing. But this time, two pink lines appeared! My excitement was overwhelming; I hardly knew what to do next. My babys going to be the luckiest! I thought. Eager to share the news, I quickly dressed to tell my husband.
I didnt ring my mum; I wanted Andrew to be the first to know. Five minutes later, I was in a black cab headed toward his office. He should have been there for hours. I hoped to ask the secretary not to announce me and surprise him. But she wasnt at her desk.
Finding no one in the reception area, I entered Andrews office and was stunned. Perched on the desk was his half-dressed secretary, and Andrew was intimately occupied with her.
Sorry to intrude! I blurted out, then fled the office. I jumped back into a cab and went straight to my parents house. I was anxious that even they might not understand my predicament.
My mother cried tears of joy that I was finally pregnant, mingled with sadness that now the child wouldnt be wanted. My father was livid.
If Andrew told everyone I was lying, I wouldnt have evidence. I couldnt file for divorce without it. It felt like a trap. Im doing my best to stay calm for my baby. But what future is there for us?
Editors Reflection.
A husbands strictness doesnt always spell trouble for a family. Offering advice isnt easy when traditions run deep. When customs are entwined with family beliefs, its hard for the younger generation to build their own lives. In this story, the woman became a hostage to her circumstances. No one can predict how things will unfold now. But she is innocent of everything. That matters most, and she should never forget it. The main thing is not to surrender and to hold onto hope.

Life teaches us that holding onto hope, even through profound disappointment, is essential. Remember: you are not defined by anothers actions, but by your strength to persevere.
