So, get thisAlice, Kates daughter, got a butterfly tattoo on her wrist for her birthday, and believe me, it definitely caused a bit of a storm in the family. Alice is a teenager and had always wanted a tattoo, innocent enough dream, but it turned out to be rather scandalous for everyone, especially her nan, Margaret. Margaret was absolutely beside herself, worried sick about how she could help her granddaughter get rid of that infection, as she called it.
Then, as if things weren’t tense enough, Kates friends made matters worse. They started warning her about all the supposed falloutgetting kicked out of uni, struggling to land a proper job, and even having a rough time finding Mr. Right.
Margaret really let Kates parents have it, blaming them for letting Alice make that decision. She thought they should have given her more guidance, and she was annoyed that they hadnt discussed it with her before taking Alice to the tattoo parlour. But, to be honest, Kates parents didnt see any problem with a tiny tattoo. I mean, Alice had turned 18, so shes an adult and should be able to make her own choices. Plus, they were chuffed about her academic achievements and thought she deserved to fulfil her wish.
But Margaret comes from a completely different time, you know? Back in her day, tattoos were strictly for prisoners and troublemakers, so shes pretty set in her ways and frowns upon things like that. Kates parents tried to explain that nowadays, tattoos are really just a way for people to express themselves and theyre nothing to do with criminal behaviour anymore. It really just highlighted how differently the older and younger generations view tattoos.
In the end, Kates parents were just happy that Alice loved her birthday present, though poor Margaret was still struggling to get her head round how much times have changed. It does leave you thinking: Should Kates parents have stepped in and stopped the whole tattoo thing? At the end of the day, there isn’t a right answer, is there? Opinions will always be split depending on your values and the era you grew up in. Some reckon parents should have more control, especially when their kids are young and impulsive, while others believe that once youre an adult, you ought to be free to make your own choiceseven if theyre totally different from what your familys used to.
