Usually, making a match follows traditional customs, but as friends and relatives have experienced, things can sometimes get complicated and create tension between families. In my case, issues began with my fiancés parents, who were the first to raise concerns. Their main request was that I undergo a medical examination. At first, I dismissed it, though I found it extremely odd. My parents were equally astonished and rejected the idea as nonsense. Still, my future mother-in-law wasn’t satisfied with their response.
To my surprise, she insisted that all members of my family provide medical certificates. This was entirely unheard of for us. My father couldnt hide his frustration and left the room to avoid an argument. I was deeply embarrassed, while my fiancé just sat there, clearly aware of his parents’ expectations. Later that evening, I discovered my mother-in-law had arranged separate rooms for me and my fiancé. I guessed it might be a family tradition and respected their choice, even if I thought it strange.
Before saying goodnight, my mother-in-law told me that early the next morning, we would have to visit a solicitors office to draw up and sign a marriage contract. That was too much for me. I assured her Id be prepared, but instead chose to leave. I packed my belongings and walked away. I cut off all contact with my fiancé and his family, changing my phone number and deleting them from my social media, not wanting any further interaction. It was crucial for me to recognise that my boundaries, freedom, and rights were being disregarded. My advice to other young women is to look after yourselves and never tolerate abuse or disrespect. No one has the right to violate your rights or freedoms, so dont hesitate to leave any situation where you arent valued as you deserve.
