My father-in-law was speechless when he saw how we were living.
James and I first met at the wedding of some mutual friends. Afterwards, I moved to London and managed to find myself a job. Honestly? I was over the moon at finally leaving the countryside behind. Our relationship took off quickly just a year later, our daughter was born.
But then everything changed.
Why is our daughter blonde with blue eyes when both you and I have dark hair? James asked.
Darling, I think she looks just like your father. See how similar they are? I replied.
Dont give me that. A child should resemble their mum or dad, not some distant relative. And my mother keeps insisting shes not mine.
From the start, I have to say that Victoria, my mother-in-law, never took to me. She believed I didnt love her son and that moving to the city was all I cared about. But Jamess father, Richard, was always a kind soul. Hes divorced from Victoria and has a new family, but hes never forgotten about James. Family dynamics can be complicated.
Anyway, one day James brought another woman into our home. He told me to pack my things and leave at once. I didnt have any other options.
There was nowhere else for me to go. My own parents didnt want me back with a child in tow. I rang up a friend who let us stay with her for a few days. Eventually, I found a room in a shared flat and moved in there with my daughter. Unfortunately, my money was nearly gone.
One afternoon, I popped into a shop and heard someone calling me.
Girls, where have you got to? I even went all the way back to the village looking for you, said my father-in-law.
Hello. Its good to see you, I whispered.
I know what James has done, and theres no excuse for it. He and his mother are both the same, really. Where are you living at the moment?
Were renting a tiny room.
Alright. Im in a hurry just now, but as soon as Im back, well sort out your housing situation. Here, take thisit should last you for a couple of weeks, he said, handing me an envelope.
I was so relieved. At least I could buy food and milk for my daughter.
Richard came back sooner than expected and paid us a visit. He was stunned by the state we were living in. His new wife wasnt at all supportive and wouldnt accept us moving in. Still, he found another wayhe put all his savings into buying a small flat and left it to his granddaughter. I tried to refuse such a gift, but he wouldnt hear of it. He said it wasnt for me, but for his granddaughter.
Within a month, my daughter and I were settling into our new home. Richard even brought over some furniture and things wed need.
Dont rush to put your little one in nurseryshe needs her mum just now. Ill help wherever I can, dont you worry. And my wife has finally come roundshed like to meet her granddaughter.
Thank you so much, I said gratefully.
Dont cry, love. You can always come to me for help; Ill never turn you away. Things will get better in time, youll see.
Im so grateful that my daughter has such a wonderful grandfather, even if things didnt work out well with her father. Richard did everything he could to help us through tough times.
Years have passed. Im married now, but I never forgot about my father-in-law, Richard. Hes always a welcome guest in our home, and we see him often.
