During their divorce, a wealthy husband chose to leave his wife with a derelict farm, abandoned and lost in the heart of the English countryside. Yet, a year later, something happened that caught him utterly off guard.
William, you do realise I have no need of you out here, dont you? Elizabeth said firmly. I suggest you go back to the city.
What city are you on about? he replied wearily. Shed been betrayed by the person she trusted most, and had no fight left in her. They had started from nothing: sold their London flat and poured everything they had into their business. William offered only a small room in a shared house, while Elizabeths cleverness and devotion made their success possible. For years, they lived modestly, moving from one let to another, but eventually found their footing.
As time passed, William began to act like the real master. Slyly, he transferred all their assets into his own name, ensuring Elizabeth would be left with nothing after their separation. Once everything was under his control, he filed for divorce.
Do you really think this is fair, William? Elizabeth asked, resignation in her voice.
He merely shrugged, unbothered. Lets not start all that again. Youve not really contributed in ages. I do everything, you do nothing.
You told me to take a break and look after myself, she replied, calm and collected.
William sighed, visibly irritated. Im sick of all this pointless bickering, Liz. Oh, by the way, remember that old farm I inherited from my former boss, Mr. Pritchard? He passed away and left me that bit of land in Yorkshire, completely worthless. Perfect for you. If you dont want it, youll get nothing at all.
Elizabeth gave a bitter smile. She saw right through him; after twelve years together, she finally realised shed lived with a stranger.
Fine. But on one condition the farm is transferred to my name, officially.
No skin off my nose. Will save me on taxes, William grinned sarcastically.
Elizabeth said nothing more. She packed her things and took a room at a guesthouse. Determined to make a new start, she would face whatever was waiting for her a deserted farm or simply barren earth. Shed see once she arrived. If there was nothing, shed return to London or find another way to rebuild her life.
She loaded her car with just the bare necessities, leaving the rest behind with William and his new flame. If he thought he could still rely on her intelligence and experience, he was sorely mistaken. The new partner, whom Elizabeth had met only a handful of times, seemed more arrogant than wise.
William handed her the deeds with a mocking smile. Best of luck.
And to you, Elizabeth replied, unphased.
Dont forget to send me a postcard from the cowshed, he laughed.
Without a word, Elizabeth closed the car door and drove away. As she left the city behind, tears streamed down her face. She didnt notice how long shed wept until a gentle knocking on her window brought her back to reality.
Are you all right, my dear? My husband and I noticed youve been here awhile, an elderly lady asked kindly.
Elizabeth looked at the woman, then glanced at the rear-view mirror, noticing she had parked by a bus stop. She mustered a faint smile.
Im fine, just a bit overwhelmed, thats all.
The lady nodded, understanding. Were just back from the hospital. Our neighbour is all alone in there, with no one to visit. Are you heading up to Richmond?
Elizabeth raised her brows in surprise. Richmond? Thats where the farm is?
Yes, though its hardly a farm now. The owner died and no ones really cared for it since. Just a few locals tend to the animals more from kindness than sense.
Elizabeth gave a soft smile. What a coincidence. Thats exactly where Im headed. Let me give you a lift.
The elderly woman took the front seat while her husband settled in back.
Im Elizabeth, she introduced herself as she drove along winding roads and green hedgerows.
Im Margaret Harris, and this is my husband, John, the woman replied warmly.
During the ride, Elizabeth learned much about the farm tales of theft, the loyal few who still looked after the stock, and just how bleak things had become. When they arrived, it was worse than shed expected: fields empty, the barn nearly collapsing, with only about twenty cows remaining. Still, Elizabeth decided she would stay and fight for a new beginning.
A year later, Elizabeth watched with pride as eighty cattle grazed peacefully upon her now lush meadows. She had transformed the derelict farm into a thriving business. It had not come easily; she sold her jewellery to buy feed, spent her last savings, and worked long hours. Now, demand was growing for her dairy and her produce was sought even in neighbouring counties.
One afternoon, a young woman named Emily brought her a newspaper with an advert for refrigerated lorries at a remarkable price. Elizabeth instantly recognised the phone number it belonged to Williams firm. Smiling slyly, she asked Emily to ring and offer five per cent above the asking price, provided the lorries werent shown to any other buyers.
When Elizabeth went to inspect the vehicles, there stood William, lost for words to see her.
Youre buying them? he asked in disbelief.
Yes, for the farm you so kindly handed me, Elizabeth replied evenly. Its become quite the business, and were expanding.
William could only stare, speechless. As he watched his own life unravel from afar, Elizabeth had long since left the past behind.
In the end, Elizabeth found real happiness with James, a mechanic whose skilled hands helped her bring the farm back to life. Together, they celebrated the christening of their daughter amongst friends and neighbours, while William could do nothing but look on from a distance as his own world faded away.
