Richard Was Sure His Wife Would Cheat on Him—So He Hatched a Plan to Catch Her in the Act, Only to Be Shocked by What He Discovered

Richard was convinced his wife would eventually betray him. Determined to catch her out, he put a plan in motionand what he discovered left him gobsmacked.

Darling, arent you going to be late? Emma remarked, as her husband was chatting away on his mobile. Your flights in two hours.
Did I not mention? Richard looked over at his wife in mild surprise. The business trips been postponed. Looks like I wont be leaving for a few more days yet.
I see, replied Emma, darting straight into the kitchen to grab her phone. After firing off a text to someone, she returned to the lounge. Watching her behaviour only made Richard more certain of his suspicionhis wife must be seeing someone else. After all, she was always happy for him to go off with his mates or disappear on business for days, never once causing a fuss if he rolled in after a few too many pints at the pub. All his friends told him, half-jealous, that women like Emma were rare as hens teeth and that hed be mad to look a gift horse in the mouth. Still, Richard was eaten up with doubt.

He was eight years older than Emma. Perhaps, he thought, shed found herself a younger man who suited her better.
At least, Richard had the good sense to keep his suspicions to himself. Accusing her without solid proof would have been completely out of order. He needed to be absolutely certain, so he could think of no better plan than to set up cameras all over their London flat.

When he finally set off for his business trip, Richard was in a thoroughly foul mood. Even Emma noticed how miserable he seemed, nearly offering him some paracetamol. The care in her voice unsettled him and, for a moment, he almost believed everything was fine.

He didnt have much time or desire to check the footage while he was away, but in the evenings hed open up the app, watch five minutes, then slam the laptop closed, banishing it from arms reach before temptation set in.

The business trip zipped by. On his return, Richard sent Emma off to work, then powered up his laptop to watch the recordings. He half-hoped he wouldnt find anything.

He scrolled through the surveillance footage. At first, everything was as ordinary as ever. Emma woke up, had breakfast, tidied the house. Later in the day, though, Richard noticed his wifeusually so impeccably dressedlounging in shorts and his oversized t-shirt at the PC, playing a video game. Other gamers voices trickled from the speakers. It turned out Emma had a bit of a gambling habit on online games.

Well, thats hardly ideal, Richard admitted to himself. But everyones got their quirks.
He sped through the rest of the footage. Nothing changed: just Emma, the computer, and her chores. More importantly, there hadnt been a single unfamiliar bloke in the flat the whole time.

Relieved, Richard closed the laptop and let out a sigh. Now, he just felt wracked with guilt for ever doubting his wife. On a whim, he decided hed buy her a massive bouquet of roses and plan a special dinner. But, for the time being, he thought hed keep the cameras running a while longer. Little did he knowThat evening, as Richard fussed over candles and wine, the weight in his chest eased. When Emma arrived home, her eyes widened in surprise at the table hed set, flickering with golden light and filled with the scent of roses.

Whats all this? she asked, laughter peeking into her voice.

Richard, caught off guard by a new surge of emotion, simply replied, I missed you. Thats all. He placed his phone face-down and reached for her hand, squeezing it gently. As they ate and talkedabout everything and nothinghe let himself notice the way her laugh filled the room, the way she listened to his stories, the tiny jokes carved into the everyday.

Before clearing the plates, Richard hesitated. Em, theres something I need to say. He confessed everything: the suspicion, the insecurity, and the cameras. He watched her face, expecting coldness or anger. But she just let out a long sigh.

You daft man, Emma said softly, reaching out to brush his cheek. All these years, you never realized? I never needed excitement or drama. I just needed you. She grinned, tears in her eyes, half-scolding, half-laughing. And if you ever want to know what Im really up to, just ask, you muppet. Ill even let you join my gamesthough youll probably ruin my win streak.

Relief and love tangled in Richards throat. They stood in the kitchen, arms wrapped around each other, amid the scent of roses and the city lights beyond. For the first time in years, Richard felt something faltering inside him finally slip free. Trust, he realized, had quietly come home.

Later that night, as they cuddled up on the sofa, Richard reached for the laptop, deleting the camera app for good. Emma looked at him with a mischievous glint. Next time you want to spy, just look at me, she whispered, snuggling closer. Ive got nothing to hide except how much I adore you.

Together, they watched the night deepen outside, wrapped in the kind of peace you find only when you finally stop searching for what was there all along.
