I was on a family holiday in England with Tom, our two boys Jack and Harry, and I thought everything would be smooth sailing. One day we signed up for a hoponhopoff bus tour that would whisk us around a few offthebeatentrack spots around the Cotswolds places you cant really get to on foot. We set aside a morning for it and bought four tickets, each of us with a proper seat.
Just as we were settling in, a rather plump lady named Milly waddled on with her baby boy, Billy. They squeezed themselves between the rows and Milly plopped down on the back seat, only to realise Billy wouldnt fit there at all. She got up, looking for another free spot for the little guy.
Her eyes fell on our lanky boys, and she thought, Perfect, Ill put him next to those. Tom stepped in straight away, saying wed paid for those seats and there was no reason to push our children around. Milly wouldnt back down; she even started arguing with the tour guide, insisting we should be more sociable and make room for other families. She suggested we cancel the tour and ask for a refund, and a few other tourists started chiming in, calling us selfiesnobs or something like that.
The kids eventually shuffled over so the tour could go on, while the driver waited for the drama to die down. The whole vibe was a bit soured.
Ive been wondering ever since were we in the right? Why should our kids have to squeeze into a cramped seat when wed already bought tickets for them? What do you think?
