I couldnt figure out where all the food my wife prepared kept vanishing to. Eventually, my mother-in-law revealed the truth to us.
At first, I was happy to have my mother-in-law staying with us because she really was a big help. Our son often falls ill, so we decided not to send him to nursery school. My wife asked her mother to care for our little one during the day.
Margaret agreed, but only if she could come round each day and then head back home in the evening. She wanted to be able to rest and relax in her own house.
Sometimes we had things to do in the evenings or simply wanted a night out, so wed ask a neighbour to mind our son, and Margaret would return home to put her feet up. We didnt want to exhaust her.
At first, it all worked well. Wed rush home to find our son fed, clean, and happy. After a while, though, Margaret would be gone before we returned. She didnt wait for us anymore.
My wife always cooks a few meals ahead, enough for a day or two. Every month, we hand my mother-in-law an envelope with some cash. We understand shes giving up her time and want to thank her in this way.
But I noticed all the meals my wife prepared seemed to disappear. Margaret barely eats, and our son picks at his food even less. I decided to ask my mother-in-law about it. She told me that my father-in-law stops by in the afternoons. She gives him some of our food because she doesnt have the energy to cook for him at night. So my father-in-law eats at our placeall the time.
Honestly, I was at a loss for words. My mother-in-law heads home in the evening. Is it really so hard for her to cook a simple tea? I wouldnt mind my father-in-law joining us for dinner once a week or so, but not every single day.
Whats frustrating is that there was barely anything left for our own evening meals. My wife keeps silent. When I worked out the numbers, it would probably be cheaper to hire a nanny.
Im not comfortable with how my in-laws behave. My wife wants me to keep quiet, but I have another questiondont they realise we need to watch our own finances? We pay my mother-in-law each month to look after our son, and yet theyre both eating at our expense as well. Has anyone else found themselves in a similar situation?
