My marriage ended a few months ago, and I’ve since moved into a modest flat in Croydon. Martha and I remain on amicable terms, and we still share a few responsibilities. Over a month ago she stopped by my new place early one morning to retrieve something from the laptop we once owned together.
I wasnt alone that day. Emma, a charming young woman considerably younger than Martha, was staying over. We had begun seeing each other well before the divorce was finalised.
When Martha entered the flat, Emma emerged from the bathroom wrapped only in a towel, her slender frame plainly visible. She passed Martha and, without missing a beat, said,
Good morning, Martha.
Good morning, Emma, Martha replied.
Both women froze for a heartbeat, then Emma, blushing, muttered, Well, I doubt Ill be getting any more credit for that. They burst into loud laughter, and I stood there feeling like a complete fool, watching them. The next day Emma received the credit automatically, much to our amusement.
Now I sit worrying that, God forbid, the two might become friends. Should I be concerned, or will everything settle down in due course?
Lesson: trying to control the feelings of others only keeps you chained to needless anxiety; sometimes you have to let the situation run its course and trust that honesty will sort itself out.
