After I Told My Wife Her Daughter Wasn’t My Responsibility, The Truth About Our Family Finally Came Out

After I told my wife that her daughter wasnt my responsibility, the truth about our family finally came out

Edward has been a bachelor for quite some time now. Even his younger brother is married and has children of his own. Edward just hasnt had much luckhe couldnt find someone suitable to settle down with. His family never let him forget it, constantly asking when theyd get to enjoy his wedding. He himself has long been ready for that step. When he turned 34, he decided hed had enough of living alone.

One evening in a London nightclub, he spotted a colleague out with a young lady. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, so Edward decided to join them.

So good to see you here. What brings you out tonight? he asked.

Evening, Edward. My friends visiting, so we thought wed see what the city has to offer.

Introduce us, wont you?

Of course. Edward, this is Charlotte.

Welcome to London, Charlotte. Im Edward.

Its lovely to meet new people. Lets be friends.

Can I count you among my friends? Edward asked.

Id like that, she replied.

She was charming and modest, yet obviously sophisticated. There was something about Charlotte that truly captivated Edward. He realised she might be exactly who hed been hoping to meet. During their conversation, he learned that Charlotte had a daughter who attended school. At first, he wasnt keen on the idea. But the more he thought about it, the less it bothered him.

They soon moved in together, and for a while, everything was wonderful. Charlottes daughter was often busy with school, clubs, and music lessons. When the holidays arrived, her mother would send her to stay with her grandmother.

Charlotte, meanwhile, didnt feel the need to work, since Edward made a good living and could provide for their family. However, as time passed, Edward noticed that Charlotte asked for more, not just for routine household expenses, but for extras like tutoring and additional activities for her daughter.

Edward, I need some more money for after-school clubs, she said one night. Could you give a bit extra this time?

Alright, you know I want her to grow and learn.

But, week by week, the costs kept climbing. Everything became more expensive. Sooner or later, Edwards patience wore thin. He decided he had to share his thoughts with Charlotte.

Charlotte, yesterday her teacher called. Theyre planning a school trip.

So?

I want my daughter to go, but its quite expensive. I dont want her to miss out, all the other childrens parents have agreed to pay. Theyre waiting to hear from us.

Edward replied, Charlotte, Im getting worn out by these constant expenses for clubs, lessons, trips. Why isnt her own father contributing to any of this?

You knew I had a daughter when we started. You agreed to this. If you intended to be stingy and cold-hearted, you wouldnt be with me now. I cant believe you!

With that, Charlotte burst into tears and locked herself in the bedroom. Edward felt bad and went to apologise, giving her the money she wanted. But the situation left a bitter taste. He just couldnt fathom why her daughters father remained so uninvolved. Deciding he needed a proper answer, he tried again.

Charlotte, please, I dont want to argue. Just tell me, why does your ex-husband never contribute anything for your daughter?

I dont accept his help. I dont ask for it. I dont need his money.

I honestly dont think thats fair. So, an outsider like me is meant to pay for someone elses child, while her actual father couldnt care less? It seems wrong.

You call yourself an outsider? I always thought my daughter was family to you. I thought you were a good man.

Theres no need to accuse me. I could level accusations myself.

Thats your right. But either way, I wont ask my ex for anything. If you dont want to help, then dont! Ill provide for her myself. But we will not grovel to anyone. Had enough of this responsibility? Then maybe we should just go our separate ways.

Why are you so angry? Lets talk it through and make a decision, Edward pleaded.

Im not in the mood for decisions. Im off to bed. You can sleep on the sofa. I just cant talk now.

So that night Edward slept on the couch, turning things over in his mind. It seemed Charlotte was far too proud, and he was left in a difficult spot regarding her daughter. And, with her growing up, so would the challenges and costs. Meanwhile her own father lived on, completely unconcerned. One day, looking through Charlottes laptop, Edward saw her ex-husbands photograph. Expensive car, fine clotheshe clearly wasnt short on money. If shed asked, he could certainly afford to help with his own daughter. Pride was all that stood in the way. Edward decided it was time to speak to the man directly.
