When I boarded the plane, I discovered someone was sitting in our seats.
My wife and I had planned to visit relatives in London. We bought two plane tickets, making sure there was a window seat available.
The plane we were flying on had three seats in each row, so Id picked our seats so we could sit together, with a window seat for one of us.
However, as we boarded, I found that our places were already taken. I double-checked my ticket and everything was as it should be. Sitting in my seat was a woman, and in my wifes seat, her five-year-old son. The woman acted completely unfazed, so I assumed perhaps shed just confused her seat numbers.
Youre sitting in our seats, I said.
The woman ignored me. When my wife politely repeated her request, the woman turned and said, My son wanted the window seat. Whoever gets there first gets the best spots. Were not moving. You can take those middle seats, theyre free.
I replied, Im sorry, but I specifically paid for these seats. Kindly move to your assigned seats, and please lets not make a fuss.
She snapped back, Cant you see my child is excited? Hell throw a tantrum if we move now. Havent you ever had children? Youre adults.
My wife and I decided not to argue. Instead, we asked a flight attendant for help. Only after the attendant intervened did the woman finally go to her own seats.
If getting a window seat for her child was so important, why not book the right seats in advance? Honestly, some peoples selfishness is astounding.
Im grateful the flight attendant sorted it out quickly, or the situation could have dragged on far longer. The other passengers supported us as wellId done my best not to create a scene and handled it as calmly as possible.
The thing I really dont get is why some passengers with children think theyre entitled to special treatment. Weve got children ourselves, but thats no reason to take someone elses seat or jump a queue.
In the end, I was relieved the rest of our journey was incident-free. Hopefully, next time the woman will remember to buy the right tickets in advance, so she doesnt inconvenience everyone else.
