I Took My Wedding Suit Out of the Wardrobe and Suddenly an Envelope Dropped to the Floor.

I pull my wedding suit from the wardrobe and an envelope slips onto the floor.

I cant sleep at all tonight. A little more, and my life could change dramatically, so Im on edge.

Tomorrow Im marrying my fiancée. I think Poppy Hughes is the perfect woman. Most men probably picture the perfect marriage, too. I keep wondering whether Im making the right choice. What if Im wrong? What if, in time, our marriage turns out to be a flop? Will Poppy and I be able to stay faithful to each other for the rest of our lives? Can we keep respecting and loving each other forever?

Before I even notice it, those thoughts race through my mind and dusk has already settled. I swing out of bed, splash water on my face and pour a coffee.

I still have a lot to do today. Soon my friends and family will be arriving at my flat. My best mate, James Carter, is coming over. Hes been married for years and will surely have the right words for a moment this important. Maybe hell manage to calm me down.

I retrieve the suit from the wardrobe and, again, an envelope drops to the carpet. Nothing is written on it, and Im taken aback.

Inside the envelope is a letter. Who could have written it and why?

I set the suit aside, sit on the bed and start reading. The handwriting looks familiar. At the top it says, Read this before you tie the knot.

The note is from my mother, Margaret Blake. Why would she send it now? Is there something in there that might stop me from going ahead?

A wave of worry hits me, but I pull myself together and begin to read. It says:

My son, youre about to get married. Im delighted youve found such a wonderful bride.

I want you to know that marriage isnt just about joy and fun. It carries a great responsibility. On the road there will be hurdles and setbacks, but if you and Poppy truly love each other, youll get through anything.

Marriage means youre ready to walk the whole journey with your partner. Never forget that, as a man, youre the head of the family. In many ways, your familys life depends on you.

Dont argue with your wife, especially over money. Money can never replace each other. Dont quarrel about how she spends her cash.

Remember that your wife is the best person for you and she needs your support. If she feels that, Poppy will be able to soar.

Mutual respect and understanding are the foundation of a home. When youre angry, its wiser to be alone, because anger makes you say things youll later regret, and fixing the problem then becomes very hard.

Never give your wife a reason to be jealous. If she starts doubting you, that doubt can linger for a long time.

There are many women in the world, but never forget that yours is the finest.

I hope Poppy feels the same.

Love your wife and think of us and your father. Well always be with you.

Mum.
