I gave my daughter a flat as a wedding gift. Only later did I realise what a terrible mistake Id made.
I had a wonderful wifebeautiful, loving, clever. We shared twenty-three years together, the best years of my life. But recently, a cruel illness took her from me. Wed raised our daughter together.
While my wife was still alive, she suggested we buy another flat to rent out for extra income. My pension was barely enough to scrape by, but she said the rent would bring in steady money, and if times got hard, we could always sell. Propertys always a safe bet. Our daughter, Emily, was old enough to manage her own place by then.
When Emily got engaged to her boyfriend, I gave them the second flat as a wedding present so they wouldnt have to rent. But I soon regretted it deeply. I always thought my daughter had a good head on her shouldersuntil she did this.
The moment I signed the flat over to her, she sold it straight away and bought a brand-new Mercedes with the money.
“Where are you going to live, Emily?” I asked.
“Oh, Dad, well easily save up for another flatwell just rent for now. Tom and I always dreamed of owning a proper car. Weve still got a few thousand left, so were flying to Spain. We deserve a proper holiday after all this.”
Saying I was shocked would be an understatement. And how long do you think that car lasted? Exactly. Three months later, my son-in-law crashed it, turning it into scrap. At least Emily wasnt hurt. Then she found out her Tom had taken up with another woman and left him.
Emily had no choice but to move back in with meshed lost her husband, the flat, and the car all.
