I arrive home after a long day at work, completely exhausted—all I want is to kick off my shoes, collapse onto the sofa, and maybe even doze off for a bit. As I reach for my keys to unlock the door, something catches my eye.
A tiny coin is wedged in the lock. It’s small, barely noticeable, but it definitely shouldn’t be there. I live alone, and I certainly didn’t leave anything like that.
At first, I think it’s just a coincidence or a silly prank, but then my stomach drops—what if it’s not an accident?
I quickly pull my hand away from the door and do what instinct tells me—I call the police. While waiting, I frantically search for answers. And what I find chills me to the bone… 😱😱 If you ever notice something like this, be very careful. 😲 Read on below…
Turns out, this is an old trick used by burglars and con artists. They slip a coin (or a thin piece of plastic) between the door and the frame, usually near the lock.
The idea is simple: if you’re home, you’ll open and close the door, and the coin will fall out. But if it stays in place for days, it means no one’s around—and the house is ripe for robbery.
It’s a silent, almost invisible way to check if someone’s gone on holiday or a business trip. That’s how thieves pick their targets.
⚠️ How to protect yourself:
Always check your locks and door gaps, even if you live in a safe neighbourhood.
If you’re away for a while, ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your place.
Install cameras or even a dummy alarm.
Pay attention to any small details near your door—scraps of paper, coins, strange marks.
I still don’t know if someone was actually planning to break in… but since then, I’ve been a lot more careful. And I’d advise you to be too.
Check your locks. Right now.
