**The Basement Summer**
First, there was a crash. The kind that leaves your ears ringing, as if a lorry had ploughed straight into the house on the corner of Sheffield Street. Angela dropped the bowl of mince, glass shattered onto the tiles, and the cat fluttered up like a startled bird before darting under the table. Then came the silence—not the usual kind, alive with street sounds and neighbours’ footsteps, but the dead, hollow sort, like the air in wartime cellar shelters. Even the fridge stopped humming. Even the clock on the wall seemed to hold its breath.
Angela froze, arms coated in mince up to her elbows, and for a second, forgot how to breathe. Only when her heart unclenched from her throat did she realise—it wasn’t an earthquake, not an explosion, not a car crash. It was him again. Henry Whitaker from the seventh floor, fallen once more. Elderly, alone, peculiar. She’d noticed it before—how he swayed lately like an empty vase teetering on a shelf.
Without thinking, she bit her lip hard enough to draw blood and bolted up the stairs, her heart pounding like a drum. The seventh floor was directly above hers. He’d lived here for years, since the nineties. After his wife died, he’d become a shadow—moving slowly, barely speaking. Only his old vinyl records still spun in the flat in the mornings. That lingering smell, too—something medicinal, like ointment or balm. Sometimes he sat on the balcony in his bathrobe, staring down as if waiting for someone to climb the steps.
They hardly ever exchanged greetings. She out of indifference, him as if he didn’t even see her. In their building, no one truly needed anyone. They knew each other by footsteps, by creaking doors, by cooking smells—not by name, not by voice.
The door was slightly ajar. She’d known it would be—Henry always left it that way, just in case. Just in case of moments like this. She rushed in, and there it was, exactly as she’d feared.
He lay in the hallway, wearing a faded flannel shirt and worn-out joggers. His walking stick and a shattered tumbler lay nearby. His face was ashen, lips pressed into a thin line. Beads of sweat dotted his forehead.
“Henry!” Angela dropped to his side. “Can you hear me?”
His eyelids fluttered weakly. His breathing was laboured, as if he were climbing a steep hill.
“It’s me—Angela. From downstairs. I’ll call an ambulance—”
“No,” he rasped. “Just… help me up.”
“Are you hurt? Your arm? Your legs?”
“No. Just… weak. Get the chair. The white one. From the bathroom.”
“Shouldn’t I call a doctor?”
His gaze sharpened unexpectedly. “No. Enough shame already. At least spare the neighbours the sight of an old man crumpled in a dusty hallway.”
She fetched the chair. He leaned on her, on his stick, rising slowly, with effort, but on his own. When he finally sat, he exhaled as if expelling every last scrap of shame.
“Thank you… You didn’t have to—”
“I know,” she said after a pause. “But I’ll stay. For a bit.”
He didn’t argue.
And she did stay.
For a day. Then a week. Then the whole summer.
She mopped floors, cooked porridge, took out the bins. He hardly spoke. Sometimes he just stared out the window, as if waiting for someone long gone. Other times he napped in his armchair, the walking stick propped against his knees, like a sentry guarding the past.
Angela moved through his flat on tiptoe, as if it were a museum. Returning to her own flat, she felt nothing familiar—as if she lived one floor higher now, as if she’d unknowingly rented out her own home to a stranger.
She’d been sacked in spring. Downsizing. The accounts department closed. Job hunting was pointless—their town was small, vacancies scarce. Her husband had vanished fifteen years ago—drank himself into oblivion, then disappeared. Her son was in the army now, far away. His letters were rare. And no one, truthfully, needed her. She’d grown used to it—the quiet, the loneliness, like old furniture: creaky but impossible to throw away.
And then—him.
Henry Whitaker. His flat. His records. His slow, steady breaths.
After a week, he began to speak. First about music. Then about the war. About his wife—Margaret. Met her in Liverpool. She sang in a choir. He was in uniform.
“Said I looked like a moth with epaulettes. Took offence at the time. Then never could tear myself away. All of it—kids, holidays, pay slips. Then her heart gave out. And I stayed.”
He talked; she listened. Sometimes he’d snap—snatching the spoon from her hand—”Not like that! She did it differently!”—then fall silent. She’d storm off. But she always came back.
Because she knew—he was waiting.
Maybe she was too.
Once, he said, “Your voice shakes when you’re angry. Right at the end—like you can’t catch your breath. Margaret was like that. Always pretended to be strong. But inside—crumbling.”
She didn’t answer. Because it was true.
By August, he grew quieter. Barely ate. Sipped water in small, careful swallows. Sat wrapped in a blanket in his chair, staring at the corner of the room as if that was where someone important was meant to arrive.
“Get the album,” he asked once. “The one behind the books. Find the page with the rose.”
She did. Between the photos was an old postcard. A woman’s rounded handwriting, faded.
*Henry, don’t forget to water the geraniums. And take the batteries out of the remote—they’ll go flat.*
He listened—not to the words, but to her voice. Closed not his eyes, but his soul.
He fell asleep.
And didn’t wake up.
His son arrived in September. Angela met him outside the building. A plain T-shirt, tired but calm face.
“You were with him?” he asked.
“All summer,” she said.
He hugged her. Gently. No words.
“You… what were you to him?”
She wanted to say “neighbour.” Or “just helped out.”
But instead, she exhaled:
“I was there.”
He nodded.
And that was enough.
