When our only son Peter got married, my husband and I were incredibly happy about it, because we imagined how our family would be replenished with a wonderful daughter-in-law who would become our own daughter. And then we would have grandchildren. But the opposite happened. Our family did not grow, but rather shrank. My daughter-in-law took our only son away from us. I still can’t come to terms with it. I’ve heard stories from my friends about children leaving their parents’ homes because they create their own family nest. However, I never imagined that this story would affect us.
We are an ordinary family. My husband and I have worked all our lives and recently retired. We put all our efforts and love into our Peter. He graduated from high school with honors and later entered the university on his own. Peter is a very smart and handsome guy. We are really proud of him. For so many years, he has never upset us.
We wanted everything to go well in our child’s life. After graduation, my husband and I helped our son find a job. He has been working at a company and teaching at a college for several years now. At the age of twenty-eight, our son has many achievements. My husband and I decided to take care of his bright future and gave him an apartment. And recently, for his birthday, we bought Peter a car.
My son has never caused us any problems. However, for some reason, he was not particularly lucky with girls. Peter had a lot of them. Later, he fell in love for real. We hoped that the wedding would be soon. But the girl he loved got married to another guy at the last minute. My son suffered, but not for long. Soon another girl appeared in his life. But nothing worked out with her either.
It was a real tragedy for the son. He could not find a place for himself. “I will never have a family. I’ll have to be a bachelor. I’ll have to pursue a career.” I could not hold back my tears. However, I tried to calm my son down as best I could.
After that, he began to actively look for girls. He arranged dates every day. And it worked. After a while, our son told us that he was getting married and that his future wife was pregnant. Our joy knew no bounds. But we rejoiced in vain.
The daughter-in-law turned out to be cunning, she tried in every way to keep our son away from us. My son changed a lot after meeting her, he walked around as if mesmerized and did not listen to us at all. He only did what his wife said. I got the impression that my son hated us. He stopped coming to visit us and did not answer our calls.
My husband and I saw our grandson for the first time when he was three years old. The young people came for an hour and went home. This was the condition of our son, who was under the influence of his daughter-in-law. But the parents of the daughter-in-law could do anything. It seemed that our son was closer to them than to us. I still cannot understand why this happened. After all, we never pried into our son’s personal life with his daughter-in-law, never asked them for help. It’s a pity that my son has already forgotten who bought him the apartment and the car.
I just can’t find a place for myself. My friends think that it’s not that simple. Maybe she bewitched him. I don’t believe that such a thing could happen in our time. But it’s hard for me to believe that our son has changed so much. He’s changed a lot, and every day he’s getting further away from us.
