My parents were in trouble because of the loan. How could I turn my back on them and not help

The worst thing about credit is always the interest. It seems as if you have taken a small loan and have nothing to pay back, but when you have a year or two of interest to pay, it’s a different kind of money.

My dad and I originally didn’t know that my mom got into it and took out a loan. After moving into a new house, she quickly wanted to make repairs and buy a new washing machine, boiler and dishwasher, so her friend advised her to take the money on credit. And we wondered how this woman could find the money to buy new appliances and decorate her house so skillfully!

Mom paid the debt herself, afraid to tell the truth. If it hadn’t been for the downsizing, maybe everything would have turned out okay, but at fifty-four my mother was fired from her job, and there was no way to find a new one. Since there was no paycheck, she had to tell the truth to her father to help pay. And Dad came up with an ingenious idea – to reduce the interest, he took out a loan in his own name at another bank and paid off Mom’s debt. Everything would have been fine – but Dad had to pay off the debt, too.

Everyone’s life is not easy as it is, a lot of troubles and unforeseen situations, one of which was Dad’s hernia. We needed money for the surgery, recovery from it, and a long sick leave… Dad had to tell me about his and Mom’s problem with the loan.

My parents and I don’t really talk much. I’m an adult, I have a job, a husband, and with my parents, there are no common topics of conversation. But my dad found one – I need to pay the debt, otherwise they’ll take away their new apartment and evict me.

The amount was not so much, so my husband and I put together our savings, took some from his parents, and got mine out of trouble. But needless to say, my husband’s in-laws and he himself were extremely unhappy with the whole situation? My parents set themselves and me up too, being such stupid people that they couldn’t stand the old washing machine at that age.

Of course, I couldn’t refuse to help them, but now I can’t get rid of the resentment in my voice when I talk to them on the phone. And Dad’s promises to pay back all the money he spent don’t give me hope or lift my spirits. I can’t believe they got into this mess and I had to clean it up.

I resent them and get angry. I can’t get rid of these bad feelings, even though they are my parents. You should think with your head before you do something, especially when it comes to money from the bank.
